Where to Find Charging Stations in Kathmandu

Kathmandu Valley has the highest concentration of EV charging stations in Nepal. Here's where to find them and how to use them.

Major Charging Networks

1. BYD/Cimex Stations BYD vehicles can use Cimex charging stations located at major malls, showrooms, and parking areas. These support both AC and DC fast charging.

Key locations:

  • Cimex Showroom, Naxal
  • Civil Mall, Sundhara
  • Labim Mall, Pulchowk

2. Tata Power Stations Tata operates 186 charging stations across Nepal, with many in Kathmandu. These are open to all EVs, not just Tata vehicles.

Key locations:

  • Ring Road (multiple points)
  • Sinamangal
  • Koteshwor

3. Hyundai Stations Hyundai's distributor has set up 64 stations, primarily for Ioniq and Kona owners but accessible to others.

Key locations:

  • Hyundai Showroom, Tinkune
  • Naxal
  • Baluwatar

4. NEA Stations The Nepal Electricity Authority operates 62 fast-charging stations. These are usually located along highways and in city centers.

  • Kalanki

Fast Charging vs Slow Charging

Fast Charging (DC)

  • 30-80% charge in 30-45 minutes
  • Rs. 15-25 per kWh
  • Good for topping up during errands

Slow Charging (AC)

  • 4-8 hours for full charge
  • Rs. 10-15 per kWh
  • Good for parking at malls or offices

Charging Costs

Public fast charging typically costs Rs. 15-20 per unit (kWh). For a 40 kWh battery, expect to pay Rs. 600-800 for a full charge. This is more expensive than home charging but still much cheaper than petrol.

  • BYD app – For Cimex stations
  • Tata Power app – For Tata network (can be buggy)

Tips for Charging in Kathmandu

  1. Plan your stops – Know where charging stations are along your route
  2. Carry the right cables – Some stations use Type 2, others use CCS
  3. Check availability – Popular stations can be busy during peak hours
  4. Top up, don't wait – Charge when you can, not when you must

Outside Kathmandu

Charging infrastructure is expanding along major highways:

  • Prithvi Highway (Kathmandu-Pokhara) has multiple NEA stations
  • BP Highway has stations at Khurkot and Bardibas
  • Most district headquarters now have at least one station
